In Bloom: An interactive light installation bringing colour and play to CB1

This February, CB1 has hosted In Bloom, a vivid and interactive light-and-sound installation created by Edinburgh-based light art studio Kumquat Lab. The piece, which forms part of Cambridge Arts Festival 2026, is in Station Square until the end of the month. You can watch the installation on Kumquat Lab’s Instagram page here.

Shaped like an abstract flowering plant, In Bloom features softly glowing spheres mounted on sculptural stems. These spheres respond to hand movements and proximity, triggering gentle musical tones and shifting light sequences. The artwork is inspired by the natural rhythm of flower pollination, encouraging people to move between the “flowers” and create their own patterns of colour and sound as they explore.

The interactive design can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. As visitors move around the structure, individual notes blend into harmony, making the audience an integral part of the artwork itself.

In Bloom contributes to Brookgate’s growing collection of public art, adding another layer to the creative landscape we’re building across the CB1 estate. You can read more about the neighbourhood's other art pieces here.
